OrbitSpin - A Jam Game

You can play OrbitSpin here: https://alp-arslan.itch.io/orbitspin

Hello there,

Made a pretty long devlog about such a small game and deleted it after feeling too pretentious. I made this game for The Very Serious Juniper Dev Jam in 5 days. Yes, the duration was 7 days but I wasted 2 days thinking of an idea with my friend baychowski, and also for the fun of it.

I worked approximately 4-6 hours each day (total of around 24 hours) and I am pretty content with the result. It is not perfect but I probably won't improve it.

TL;DR

  • Nowadays I watch too many space documentaries so I wanted to do something with a spaceship orbiting planets.

  • My dear friend baychowski (check out his games) said "it would be cool to make a tower defense, where the spaceship protects the earth as it spins", later he said he meant shooting asteroids and such (so, a misunderstanding led to this game).

  • I used Kenney's 2d space asset packs.

  • baychowski said I should also use this shader from Deep-Fold for the earth, which I did.

  • I initially had an idle clicker type of game in mind but when the spaceship controls felt good I left that in.

  • These matters resulted in some people saying it is either too easy later on (they don't have to do anything since it's idle, which was what I had in mind but they don't know that) or there might be more upgrades.

To sum up, it was a lovely week of working on this game for me. And after uploading to itch, I've returned and played it almost 5 or 6 full times, which was an amazing feeling. Both taking a break from Radiotext after a stressful Next Fest period and making a game I enjoy playing so much.

Thank you for reading, whoever you are and wherever you live.
